8/31/06

Language: My mom read Lesson 11 to me from FLL. It was way too easy, but that is okay because I am a bit tired today.

History: My mom read Chapter 3: The First Writing from SotW to me. I thought it was neat how the Egyptians and the Sumerians wrote in pictures. We discussed the review questions on pg 16 in SotWAB and then I did the Narration Exercise (my mom wrote down my narration). I said, “The Egyptians learned to make paper and ink, but the paper didn’t last long. Before they learned to make paper they wrote on stone. That is called hieroglyphs. The Sumerians wrote on clay. That is called cuneiform. Hieroglyphics and cuneiform didn’t turn to dust after a long time like the paper did.”

Math: skip counting by 2’s to 20

Spelling: I wrote some of my spelling words in my writing tablet. (The spelling words for this week are the Word Lists from pages 26 & 30 in SW). I spelled all the words aloud. I was too tired to write them down.

Calendar: I named the months of the year, the days of the week, and then I found today in the calendar.

My favorite thing today was learning about the first writings–hieroglyphs and cuneiform.

Books My Mom Read to Me Today (8/31/06)

After lunch my mom read pages 32-60 in The Whingdingdilly by Bill Peet and Cowardly Clyde by Bill Peet (I love this book, so I asked my mom to read it again even though my dad read it to me two days ago) to Ryllan and me. Then my mom read Chapter 1 and 2 of Mummies in the Morning (#3 in the Magic Treehouse Series) by Mary Pope Osborne to me while Ryllan looked at Rainbow Frogs by Melissa Tyrell.

Now I am listening to Chapter 20 of The Secret Garden (podcast). Then I want to do my history. My mom said she would read my the next section in SotW.

I fell asleep for awhile, because I am very tired today. I don’t usually take naps at all anymore. My mom read the next section in SotW when I woke up. And we did some other lessons as well.

When Ryllan woke up from his nap my mom read us Eddie Longpants by Mireille Levert.

At bedtime my mom read us The Littlest Rabbit by Robert Kraus. Then my mom read the rest of Mummies in the Morning to me (Chapters 3-10). After each chapter she asked if I wanted her to read another. And I really wanted to find out what was going to happen next, so we ended up reading the whole book! It was cool because Jack and Annie had to help figure out hieroglyphs and we talked about those today in history!!!

Books My Mom Read to Me Today

My mom read Bill and Pete Go Down the Nile by Tomie dePaola, Merle the High Flying Squirrel by Bill Peet, and pages 1-32 of The Whingdingdilly by Bill Peet to Ryllan and me.

We listened to a pod cast of Chapter 19 of The Secret Garden as well.

My mom got Bill and Pete Go Down the Nile from the library to go along with our history lessons about Egypt. I liked that in history today we talked about the Egyptian gods includind Isis. And the Eye of Isis (a huge jewel) was in the story!

Spelling: I wrote 5 words from my spelling test in my writing tablet. I did pages 27-28 and 31-32 in SW.

Language: I wanted to recite The Caterpiller by Christina G. Rosetti to my mom again. I acted it out as I recited it. My mom thought it was very entertaining. My mom read Lessons 8-10 in FLL and I did the Enrichment Activity on page 34. My favorite part of language was the picture narration. I looked at a picture of a family making cookies and my mom asked me questions about it and I named the family members. It was fun.
History: My mom read SotW (The Story of the World) Chapter 2 Egyptians Lived on the Nile section: Gods of Ancient Egypt. We went over the review questions on page 13 in the SotWAB (The Story of the World Activity Book). And then I did the narration exercise and my mom wrote down what I said in my history notebook. This is what I said: “Set had a party for all the gods and said whoever fit in the coffin best would win it. Set knew that Osiris would fit best in it. Set closed the coffin when Osiris laid down and threw it into the Nile. Set said ‘Now I am king of all the world.’ Osiris drowned, but when Isis (his wife) wrapped him in linen he came back to life.” After the narration we talked about the Coloring Page on Student Page 7 in SotWAB about Osiris and Set. I didn’t want to color it today, but I think I may color it tomorrow. I do not like Set!

Calendar: months, days, today

Reading: I read The Baby Bunny by Margaret Hillert to my mom. I wanted to read this book because I love bunnies. My grammie and grampie have a lot of bunnies. My mom and dad say that when I an 6 and a half and Ry is 4 that we can have a pet bunny at our house. I can hardly wait!

Math:  I skip counted by 5’s and 10’s.  Then I skip counted by 2’s to 20 three times with my mom.  It was funny because I said 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 and then my mom said 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16.  I thought it was funny.  We were messing each other up, but it made us laugh.  Then we did it one more time and did it right.

Today I read Cinderella (Start-off Stories) to my mom. I borrowed it from the library because I thought I could read it and because I love fairy tales.

Math: I know how to skip count to 100 by 10’s and 5’s. I practiced that again. Today my mom started teaching me how to count to 20 by 2’s.

History: My mom read Chapter 2 Egyptians Lived on the Nile Section: Two Kingdoms Become One (pg 29-31). My favorite thing was that I guessed the White Crown King would defeat the Red Crown King and I guessed right! My mom asked me the review questions in from the Activity Book. I remembered all about it, because it was really interesting. Then I did the narration exercise to summurize this section. My mom wrote down what I said. I said “The Nile River is in Africa. It goes through Egypt. In Egypt there were two kings who fought each other. And the king with the white crown won and he wore the Double Crown. He became king over all of Egypt.” Then I did some map work. The map was of Ancient Egypt. It showed Lower Egypt were the Red Crown King ruled and Upper Egypt were the White Crown King ruled. I colored a red crown in Lower Egypt and a white crown in Upper Egypt. Then I colored the Nile River blue. And put an upside down triangle around the Nile Delta. I colored the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea blue as well.

Spelling: I wrote the word list from pg 30 in Spelling Workout (SW)in my writing tablet. Then I did pages 29 and 30 in SW. My favorite part was writing the new words in my tablet.

Language: My mom read Lessons 6 & 7 to me from First Language Lessons (FLL). I was supposed to work on my poem memorization today. And I did. I had memorized The Caterpillar and could say it word perfect the first time I said it today! That was my favorite part of language.

Calendar: Everyday we go over every month of the year and every day of the week and then find today in my Disney Princesses Calendar. I love that Princess Aurora is the princess for August! But August is almost over. I really like Princess Aurora because she is wearing a pink dress and pink if my favorite color. Liz (my aunt) and I say that we live in a pink world.

Gym: I had swimming lessons this morning. I loved it! John, my instructor, is really funny.

Reading: I read Cinderella (Start-Off Stories) to my mom. I picked this book because I love stories about princesses and other fantasty-type books.

Art: I painted with watercolors. This is one of my very favorite things to do!

My favorite part of school today was reciting by memory The Caterpillar by Christina G. Rosetti to my mom.

Currently my mom is reading The Secret Garden to me. Yesterday we actually listened to a pod cast of Chapters 15 & 16. Today we plan to listen to Chapters 17 and 18.

Yesterday was the first time I ever listened to a pod cast!

For a bedtime story my dad read Cowardly Clyde by Bill Peet to Ryllan and me.
